North Korea Investigative Mission Trip 2001

Background

If North Korea were to open its doors today, how much of a difference could the Christian Church make? You might have heard about the severe famine and of the millions dying, but many of us have grown callous to the dozens of news stories we have heard. Currently, Christians are gravely unprepared for the reunification of the two Koreas. We do not have the proper infrastructure established to meet either the physical or spiritual needs of the North Korean people. What is more alarming, however, is that the multi-billion dollar empire of the cult led by Rev. Sun-Myoung Moon and other cults such as the Jehovah's Witnesses have been preparing for North Korea opening its doors for a number of years. How terrifying would it be if, once the doors were opened, those that need the saving grace of Jesus were fed instead with the false teachings of these cults.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the Christian Church was completely unprepared to seize this great opportunity for evangelism. Instead, numerous cults entered the area and led millions astray. After the collapse, the Russian government had requested that a Bible be distributed to every student in its school system, but the Church was not equipped to satisfy this request. Now is the time to prepare for the collapse of North Korea. Now is the time to store a reserve of Bibles for every person in North Korea. Now is the time for church planting teams to be raised for every village, town, and city in North Korea - ready to enter as soon as its doors are opened.

Purpose of this trip

Our goal for this mission trip is to raise worldwide awareness and establish the infrastructure to mobilize, network, and train people for North Korea missions. Our first step to accomplishing this goal will be by going to the border of North Korea in China to meet some of the thousands of North Korean refugees in hiding there and hear their first-hand accounts, building an email list and updating people through it, and setting up an internet-based center for North Korean missions. This trip is not a one time short-term missions, but rather the beginning of an ongoing missions to North Korea. A team of three people will be leaving for China late June for three weeks.

Prayer Needs

1. Safety: Our team will be taking pictures, videotaping, interviewing, and sending emails during this trip, and if we are caught, we are putting the refugees' lives in danger. Our presence would endanger refugees we encounter and missionaries working in the area secretly because there are North Korean spies hiding out in the area.

2. Diseases: As we venture into the countryside we will be faced with many disease like Typhoid fever, malaria, Japanese Encephalitis, Hepatitis, and Tetanus. There are some outbreaks of rare diseases due to the deteriorating conditions in North Korea. Drinking water or eating in this region of China would be impossible and many foreigners who come to this region fall ill, so we will be dependent on water filters, iodine pills, and prepackaged food.

3. Relationships: Refugees will not be comfortable talking to us. Pray that God will open up these people's hearts and trust and talk to us. Pray that God would place the right people in our path so that we may be led into right places.
