Week 9 - Female Refugees

North Korean women who escape into China face tremendous risks, some worse than death itself. Merely crossing the polluted Tuean River makes them vunerable to serious health problems. Once across, they are subject to beatings and imprisonment if caught by North Korean or Chinese authorities. Worse is the possibility of being kidnapped and sold into forced marriage or prostitution.

We've listened to several jarring testimonies from female refugees. One lives with an abusive husband who beats her whenever he is drunk. Another worries about her husband who was captured and sent back to North Korea. The most disturbing story was that of a refugee who was kidnapped and sold into prostitution. She escaped but was caught by authorities and suffered unimaginable consequences.
