North
Korea Investigative Report
Week
4 - Health
The
famine in North Korea has resulted in horrifying health problems
seen only in the world's most underdeveloped regions. Malnutrition
is rampant, causing weakened bodies that make people susceptible
to more serious diseases. An entire generation of children is
suffering from stunted growth. People drink water and bathe in
rivers and lakes contaminated with sewage and human waste.
Compounding
these health problems are ill-equipped hospitals in North Korea.
Many lack essential supplies like rubbing alcohol and gauze. Some
will share disinfectants among several patients, passing along
infections from one person to the next. Cholera, fatal if untreated,
is rampant, but the common drug needed to treat it is difficult
to obtain. Health workers who deliver medicine are trying the
best they can, but the need is immense and the supplies few.
